Cerebral angiography

A catheter in one internal carotid or in the left vertebral artery fills the arteries of the brain. Turn the C-arm round a real skull and see why a run is read in the frontal and lateral views, and what the transorbital and Towne projections open up.

LAO 90° 0°

Seen as from the detector: in AP the patient's left is on your right, the head at the top. Each lateral is filmed from the injected side, so the left carotid's shows the face on your left and the right carotid's on your right.

A carotid run fills its own anterior and middle cerebral arteries and its posterior communicating; the posterior cerebral normally fills from the vertebral run, from a carotid only when it is a fetal posterior cerebral.

A left vertebral injection often refluxes down the right vertebral artery and fills both posterior inferior cerebellar arteries.
