- Crushing central chest pain spreading to the jaw or left arm — treated as a heart attack until proven otherwise.
- Fainting during exertion suggests the outflow is obstructed — aortic stenosis or an arrhythmia, never dismissed.
- Breathlessness on lying flat that eases on sitting up is the failing left heart flooding the lungs.
