Slow orders, long reachSystema endocrinum

Ductless glands that release hormones into the blood, coordinating growth, metabolism, mood, and reproduction over minutes to years.

Primary role
Regulates metabolism, growth, and internal balance
Scale
Active at concentrations near 1 in a billion
Every day
Hormone levels swing on a 24-hour clock

How it works as a whole

Where nerves send a private message down a wire, hormones broadcast into the bloodstream and are heard only by cells carrying the matching receptor. That makes endocrine control slower but far more sustained — and it makes feedback essential. Most hormone axes are loops: a releasing signal from the hypothalamus, an amplifying step at the pituitary, an effect at the target gland, and the product itself shutting the loop down. Break the feedback and the system runs away.

Other key structures

  • HypothalamusWhere the nervous system writes to the endocrine system
  • PituitaryThe amplifier — small gland, body-wide consequences
  • ThyroidSets the metabolic rate of nearly every cell
  • Adrenal glandsStress response, salt balance, and blood pressure

Connected systems

  • Nervous SystemShares control of the body, acting in hours where nerves act in milliseconds
  • Digestive SystemThe pancreas serves both systems from one organ
  • Urinary SystemHormones tell the kidney how much water and salt to keep

Common conditions

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Cushing's syndrome
  • Osteoporosis
  • Adrenal insufficiency

The through-lineAlmost every endocrine axis is a negative feedback loop, which is why hormone disorders so often present as the loop failing rather than a gland simply stopping.

Did you knowMelatonin is released on a schedule set by light hitting the retina — which is why screens at midnight are a chemical problem, not a habit.
